2011 SILVER MEDAL RECIPIENT: YANG KIM

The American Advertising Federation of West Michigan (AAF West Michigan) named Yang Kim, executive creative director and co-owner of Peopledesign, as the 2011 AAF West Michigan Silver Medal Award winner.

The Silver Medal—the American Advertising Federation’s highest honor—is awarded by local AAF chapters to professionals who have made outstanding contributions to the advertising and marketing industry and who have been active in furthering creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern.

"It's our pleasure to recognize a person who is both a gifted creative professional and a highly respected business leader as this year's Silver Medal Award winner," said AAF West Michigan President Allen Crater, president of Stevens Advertising. "Yang exemplifies everything our organization stands for. We are privileged to learn from her, and honored that she is an active member of both AAF and the West Michigan creative community.”

“Yang Ki
m changes our minds”
Kim has designed everything from identity systems and complex corporate product literature programs to kicky little cocktail napkins. “Yang Kim changes minds,” says the Peopledesign team in Kim’s company bio. “Our creative director, she is our top visual communicator, always able to find fresh, startling ways of seeing and showing. She saves us all time and consistently brings home our bacon, jump-starts our engines, without ever resorting to a single cliché.”

With a long list of design awards and publications to her name, Kim has made her mark on contemporary graphic design. Because of this standing, she is now sought out as a lecturer, judge and teacher for the world’s most prestigious graphic arts organizations and schools. In 2010, she co-wrote and designed Brand Identity Essentials, published by Rockport Press. Her broad experience and pragmatic style help budding advertisers, designers and business owners gain a clear picture of what it takes to live and work in the world of commerce. Young designers who cut their design teeth working at Yang’s elbow understand that inspiration is perspiration. “Creativity,” says Kim, “is hard work.”
